SR-22 is a type of auto insurance coverage that is a requirement in most American states after a driver commits a serious traffic offense like a DUI, vehicular assault, and other serious traffic offenses involving severe endangerment of pedestrians or other drivers or negligence. After committing such an offense, the offender’s driver’s license is usually revoked or suspended. To get it back, the offender is required to have SR-22 insurance.
Most people mistake an SR-22 cover as a standalone type of coverage. However, an SR-22 filing is just a certificate that contains an insurance provider’s guarantee to the US Department of Motor Vehicles that the car owner has obtained the legally required auto insurance coverage. Therefore, an SR-22 is an arrangement where the auto insurance company is willing and able to file the required paperwork notifying the state that the vehicle owner is adequately insured.
The auto insurance company must also keep updating the state on the vehicle owner’s insurance cover renewals or cancellations. The state usually requires the SR-22 filing for a couple of years following the incident so that they can have enough time to verify that the driver is maintaining his/her insurance in good standing.
As per the requirements in most US states, an SR-22 filing has to be made when drivers fail to follow road rules. There are a number of traffic offenses that may force a vehicle owner to file for SR-22, such as driving without insurance coverage, drunk driving, reckless driving, causing injuries to pedestrians or other drivers in an at-fault accident, and having been involved in too many minor accidents in a short period of time causing too much damage to their driving record. In order to get your driving license back after such violations, you must get SR-22 insurance. If you are a great driver who follows the law to the letter, you will never need SR-22 insurance.
A lot of insurance companies offer SR-22 insurance to their clients. However, there are many insurance companies which will turn you away or even fail to respond to your request. This is because this type of cover is seen as a high-risk cover. You are better off dealing exclusively with auto insurance companies which specialize in high-risk insurance. Find a good agent who handles SR-22 filings on a regular basis; they will have more options and will most likely be more efficient.
Purchasing a car with SR-22 insurance is not a complicated procedure. You just need to instruct your agent to do it or buy it directly online if you are able to find a reliable provider. The insurance firm will take care of the rest.
Before committing to one, you need to shop around while comparing prices, discounts, offers, and terms. However, going to one insurance agent who specializes in SR-22 maybe a lot quicker and you will also get accurate prices faster.
Keep in mind that since SR-22 insurance is riskier, it will be more expensive than normal auto insurance.
